At an Edo-period inn, feel what it must have been like to be a traveler on the Tokaido in times gone by

Set among mountains, Okabe Shuku is a small post town which appears in Ikku Jippensha's picaresque comic novel, "Tokaidochu Hizakurige". Waki-honjins and hatagos (lodgings for travelers of high rank and commoners, respectively), shops, houses and many other buildings once stood in the town, whose focus was its two honjins (lodgings for nobles, court officials and the like). Among these was found the ohatago (great inn) "Kashibaya", a large machiya (traditional town house) built approximately 180 years ago in the Edo period, and still standing today. The interior of the house, including the choba (office), kitchen and guest rooms, has been reproduced exactly the way it was, so that visitors can learn about the lifestyle of travelers and townsfolk of olden times.
Posted photos Main "Kashibaya," a souvenir shop selling local products and souvenirs, and the Japanese restaurant "Isshoan" are also on the premises.
