Venture down under the sacred alter to see paradise on Earth

Tokai Betsuin is a branch temple of the renowned Zenkoji Temple, a popular tourist destination in the Shinshu region (Nagano Prefecture). Here, you can do what is known as kaidan-meguri. Go under the temple alter and walk through a dark corridor to try to find a lock that is connected to the temple's principle object of worship. If you succeed, you may receive the promise of rebirth in paradise. You descend into the basement from the main hall and fumble forward in the dark. Then, all of a sudden, a dazzling Pure Land of Bliss appears right before your eyes. As your eyes slowly get used to the light, you will see brilliant, golden Buddhist statues, colorful murals, and decorative ceiling paintings-a sight nothing short of paradise on Earth. From late June to mid-August, you can also see a variety of lotus flowers decorating the temple grounds.
