[Shuzenji Onsen]

A hot spring established by Kobo Daishi for a child devoted to his parent

Shuzenji Onsen is full of atmosphere, with many historical buildings and hot spring inns standing along the Katsura River. The name of the area is derived from Shuzenji Temple, founded by Kobo Daishi. The hot spring is also related to Kobo Daishi, for it is said that he struck the rock in the water with a Buddhist pestle called a Tokkosho, to make holy water spring out for a good child who washed his sick father with river water. The Tokko no Yu, where the hot spring originated, has become the symbol of Shuzenji Onsen.
