Mikawa-Anjo Station

[Ansho Castle Ruins (Anjo City Museum of History)]

The Oda, Imagawa, and Matsudaira clans fought over this castle

Ansho Castle was a natural fortress on a hilltop surrounded by marshes. A castle without a tower, it was fought over by the Matsudaira and Oda clans during the Sengoku period. Today, Daijoji Temple stands on the former site of the castle's hommaru, Hachimansha Shrine is on the site of the ninomaru, and Anjo City Museum of History is on the site of the sannomaru. Anjo City Museum of History has a wide range of collections dating from the Jomon period to the modern era, and is well worth a visit. In particular, the Jinmenmon Tsubogata Doki (a clay pot with pictures of human faces on it) excavated from the Kamezuka remains is a must-see. With Anjo City Archaeological Research Center and the Civic Art Gallery north of Ansho Castle Ruins, the area is a place called Ansho Bunka no Sato where you can enjoy art and history.
