[Gozan no Okuribi]

Chinese characters and shapes of fire float in the summer sky

"Gozan no Okuribi" is a summer tradition in which five Chinese characters and shapes are drawn in flame on mountains around the Kyoto Basin and float in the night sky. It is also a traditional event which holds significance as a religious ritual for giving a good send off to ancestors returning to the world of the dead after their visit to the world of the living during Obon. "Daimonji" is lit at 8 o'clock in the evening, followed in order five minutes apart by "Myoho", "Funagata", "Hidari-Daimonji" and "Toriigata". The fires to send off the ancestors light up the night sky as if lamenting the passing of summer.
