A Kyoto summer symbol: gorgeously decorated yamahoko floats

Gion Matsuri, the quintessential Kyoto summer tradition. At Yasaka Shrine, many different rituals and festivities take place over the course of a month. Two highlights are the float parades which take place before and after the festival: the Saki no Matsuri Yamahoko Junko of 23 floats on July 17th and the Ato no Matsuri Yamahoko Junko of 10 floats on July 24th. The "tsuji-mawashi" (turning of the floats) when they take a corner at an intersection is a particularly spectacular sight. At the Yoiyama event before the parade, spectators get a fantastical treat for their eyes and their ears as each district adorns its float with lanterns to the accompaniment of Gion festival music. The place bustles with people who come to admire the floats in yukatas with fans in their hand. Paid spectator seats are available for both the Saki no Matsuri event on July 17th and the Ato no Matsuri event 24th.
